Home Again Microchipping
Microchipping is a relatively new technique for identifying your pet.
A tiny chip about the size of a grain of rice is placed under your dog’s or cat’s skin. This chip contains a number which identifies your dog. Once the chip is placed, your pet can be scanned with a special scanning device and the number will appear on the screen. Your pet can be traced back to you via a data bank which holds your name and address in conjunction with your pet’s number.
Most veterinarian and humane societies now have the scanning device and a microchip is one of the first things we check for when a stray animal comes in. Microchipping can be done at any time and does not require anesthesia, however the needle for injecting the microchip is quite large so we often do it at the time of the spay or neuter. Let us know when you come in if you are interested.
For those traveling outside of the United States, all of our Microchips are 134KHz (ISO) with a 15-digit number, which is a requirement for entry into many countries.
